Question: I am concerned that my applicant's criminal background shows a sex offender result, but the photo and DOB don't match.
Answer: Our criminal background report is more broad when it comes to sex offenders. Which means, any match with the Year of Birth (plus or minus one year, not even matching the exact month and day) and with same First name or Last Name will show any sex offender close to those results.
The reason we choose to do this: Many convicted criminals, especially sex offenders, know how to game the system. On their rental applications, they could lie about their address, birth day, etc., hoping that their conviction will not be found. That is why we do a broad search. We want to catch the applicants with sex offender record who are trying to game the system.
Important! You should compare the physical description and the picture on the record to your applicant to eliminate any doubt they are a sex offender.
In other words, if you can see that the photo doesn't match, or the DOB doesn't match, then you can rule out that your Applicant is not the same person that is appearing in the report results.
As long as the photo provided or the physical description provided does not match the applicant's, that's how you can tell the applicant is not the sex offender on the report.
Additionally, you can use applicant's Driver's License to compare eye color, hair color, height, weight to see it differs from details on sex offender.
Background: Criminal report is based on Name (first and last), Address, Year of birth. Reports include last 7 years for criminal convictions (not arrests) and sex offender data may go beyond the 7 year limit per Industry Standards.
